mrsa

home

Methacillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus infections, a so-called "super infection," is becoming more prevalent and is not confined to the hospital setting anymore. It is commonly contracted in the locker room, on wrestling mats, artificial turf, houses of people with the infection, public restrooms, public transportation systems, industrial work places and public gathering places. It is generally contracted after a break in the skin but it may be so small that you don't even notice the skin break at first.

There are generally two presentations. The first is the easiest to recognize because it happens in an open wound. The wound turns red &

swells. The redness is followed by pain and grows rapidly. It has a raised border and never quite gets a scab formation. It does not respond to topical antibiotics. The second starts as some type of pain under the skin followed by swelling . This soon enlarges to what looks like a boil that one would naturally want to drain. It is very painful and starts limiting motion of the affected part.

If you believe you might have a MRSA infection, it is best to get a culture and sensitivity lab study done. This will tell you what type of

bacterial infection you have and what antibiotics it is sensitive to. I have also found that when doing a culture you need to go as

deep into the lesion as possible . There may be one strain of MRSA on top and a second in the deeper section that is even

more resistant than the superficial one. Also if you have had a MRSA infection before and it reoccurs, you must do another culture

& sensitivity test because it may be a different strain, or have mutated. Unfortunately these tests take about three days to get complete

results. I would take definitive action before the results come back, even if I had to change tactics after reading the results. This

infection can end in death so time is of the essence.

The first thing that I suggest is to address all open wounds with Iodine tincture from the pharmacy. If there is an allergy to iodine then

use a combination of sea salt and Goldenseal powder topically. DO NOT use any ointments, pastes or creams as they seal in the

infection making it easier to grow and multiply. If possible keep the wound exposed to the air. If not then use a loose guaze

dressing.

The next thing to do is watch carefully for the classic signs of infection: heat, redness, swelling, pain. If these start to appear, then

go directly to your physician and get a culture and sensitivity test. I would also suggest a few botanical remedies while you wait

for the culture results. You could start with very high doses of Vitamin C(10-20 grams) three times per day. If you are not used to Vit C

then it is recommended to start below 5 grams, as the side effect of high doses that you are not used to is diarrhea. Echinacea,

Goldenseal, Colloidal Silver(not greater than 15ppm), would be good to add to your supplement regime. There is a Traditional

Chinese Medicine in patent form called Lien Chiao Cheih Tu Pian that was created for lesions manifesting as furuncles, carbuncles

or boils. Another useful Chinese medicinal is called Yunan Pai Yao as it was created to stop wound infection and heal tissue

injuries. There is a little red pill along with the main formula that should not be taken. I repeat should not be taken as it will tend to

coagulate the blood unneccessarily. I always give my patients Transfer factors which are antigen specific immune stimmulating

agents. Transfer factor Multi-Immune and Transfer factor STP are the two I reccommend.

At this point you also want to think very clearly about your personal health codes. Do not let anyone use your towels, drink from

your glass or use your silverware. Do not let the wound touch anything other than your own clothes. Try to stay out of the public

until you know for sure what you are deaing with. There is a product called Byotrol that I tell people to purchase to disinfect their

homes. It has the remarkable property of killing MRSA on contact and preventing any spread of disease. It lasts for at least three

days before another application is applied.

CLOSED MRSA

OPEN MRSA
